Screen Takeover Notification Design
Project Overview
In 2023 I designed screen takeovers to prompt Disney World and Disneyland app users to update their apps due to a change in Google security. The design involved direct and concise messaging, a clear call to action and updated branding. It also had a strict delivery timeline.
The Challenge
The challenge was that there wasn’t much to go on in terms of creative expectations. It took digging into some past knowledge, referencing Disney’s design system, and some trial and error to determine what look would work best.

User Flow
The upgrade was initially optional and the flow here applies to users who were on Disney property. If not enough users adopted the change after one week then the update would become mandatory.
Research & Inspiration
Below are a few past examples of similar types of messages. Not much was known about the design requirements at this stage, so anything that I could reference from the past was helpful.
Design
When users decided to update they would be directed to the app store. I’d recently created new preview images for the app stores so I used them as a starting point. Below are samples of that creative as well as some brand foundations.
Final Designs
The “before” and final versions below. For the final versions, I carried over the pixie dust from corresponding creative and made the blue and purple backgrounds similar to each other in color intensity. The buttons followed existing CTA button patterns. The icon was also a part of the existing Disney library.

Results & Next Steps
Over 90% of users completed the app update when prompted by the screen takeover so a mandatory update was not necessary.
This look has become the new creative standard for update messaging. It has already been used for updates to the Genie feature and was recently used to encourage users to take advantage of the new and improved Lightning Lane feature.
